Kintsugi

Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese technique to repair broken or damaged porcelain and pottery. Only natural materials are used to restore the objects, so they are completely safe to use with food again. Urushi (vegetable lacquer) is the main material which comes from the lacquer tree that is only found in the Far East and in South East Asia. It has been used like a glue and a coating since the Jomon era, 9000 B.C. This traditional way of work is a part of the art of maki-e which started in the 7th century.

Kintsugi was created in the 15th century when the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa asked that his broken china tea bowl be repaired by a maki-e master, as the first reparation that he had asked for, in China, hadn’t please him.

Today, kintsugi has become more and more known and practiced around the world. But unfortunately, it is common that the philosophy and the real potential of kintsugi is not well interpreted. Urushi is the only natural lacquer that is food safe unlike synthetic materials that are often introduced as kintsugi materials outside of Japan.

Kintsugi’s uniqueness is that it doesn’t try to hide damage. It is considered part of the history between the owner and the object. The reparations are embellished with metallic powder, enhancing the value of the object. It is an invitation to contemplate the beauty of the imperfect.
